A Failure?

Is OmniaHD i8910 a failure? I really don't know, there are just so many problems regarding to the phone. N97 has a weaker CPU but no one is questioning the software support of Nokia, I mean the N97 is all about the internet, no question ask, it got everything about it from Internet Widget to its software support everything is flowless about it so no need for a snappy CPU while OmniaHD is all about its multimedia side. The phone has a good 8MP camera, HD Video Recording, nice music player visual effects, and yes a good CPU.

But what makes a phone a "GOOD PHONE"? The answer is a good software support from its creator. Samsung is just not good doing these things right. They got all the power but they are just ignoring it. Look at Innov8, it is really a good phone but some problems make it really bad, some says that "it is nothing but a good camera".

So you are asking, what is the problem about OmniaHD anyway? Here I will answer you.

1. The number one problem of OmniaHD is its bad audio quality in Video Recording, do you call that a HD videos when the audio is just so terrible? Common Samsung, this is not we want. Low-quality AMR Narrow Band codec at 8000Hz 16 bit 2 channel 12.8 Kbps bit rate is just plane stupid. HERE you can see a sample of its quality. And also did you heard about the problem with audio sync with video? Now that really sucks.

2. Battery life, when I first heard the battery life goes about 600hours in Standby when it was still in Protos, I said "WTF 600hours???!" but now, "WTF 6hours??!!" Now that is crazy! One of the Symbian Freak member, Dogmann wrote an impressive review of the phone, he said "The fastest and smoothest s60 device" but now look what he is saying "Oh well back to my trusty and reliable Bold that looks like it's going to beat my E90's ownership record. I'm now waiting to see just when the N900 the Nokia Tablet is due to arrive as that is now the devcie that intrests me the most". Some says that there are some solution on this problem like changing the packet data connection to "When Needed"and turning the Video sharing off but heck? it doesnt "really" solve the problem, I mean, a firmware update should solve this.

3. Samsung PC suite, aside from copying the PC suite of nokia, the latest PC suite of Samsung just don't recognize the OmniaHD. How great is that?

4. Java Problem is very disappointing, experiencing some freezing of the phone while running Java application? You can get it here on OmniaHD. Here I quoted something from Bec "
Please note that by heap it just is a part of the ram memory. It's not a different memory. Samsung could fix it probably by just changing a simple value. Unfortunately they never bother to do anything..."

5. Samsung has a record of poor record of "software support". Actually, some of these problems of OmniaHD are also problems of Innov8 like having bad quality audio of in Video recording and poor battery life. Samsung NEVER fix it, and they never will. So my hope for fixing the problems of OmniaHD is gone. I really don't think Samsung will do it. Here is what they are doing, release the phone, release some few firmware updates with nothing on it, then just leave it unsupported.

I really don't know what Samsung is thinking. The specification of this phone is great, but I think they just wasting it. Thinking of buying the phone? think twice! My advice is to wait for a firmware update that will fix these problems. If ever they will fix it. LOL!

There are so many alternatives around, like N97 and Satio. I know, OmniaHD is just the best, but I don't think it will really give us what we need. Well, if you love to charge almost everyday, twice a day, or you don't need a a good audio quality in Video recording, or you love your phone freezing while playing a Java games, then buy the OmniaHD now. N97 offers what OmniaHD offers except for much better Camera and a lot of features in Video recording while Satio is just the same with N97 (both having TFT resistive touch screen and a VGA video recording) with a good camera minus the qwerty keyboard. And I think the support of the two phone are greatly better than OmniaHD.

Me? I am thinking of buying something else. I still love the OmniaHD, but if they will not fix it, I don't think I will get it. I am waiting for this event: http://www.samsungunpacked.com/
I am actually waiting for a WinMO 6.5 Device with a Xenon Flash in it.
